Product Details

Iodoethane #CAS75-03-6

Colorless to pale yellow liquid. It turns red upon long-term storage. Melting point: -108℃, boiling point: 72℃, relative density: 1.9358 (20/4℃), refractive index: 1.5133, specific gravity: 1.5130. Soluble in ethanol and ether. Chemicalbook can mix with most organic solvents. Slightly soluble in water and gradually decomposes. Decomposes into toxic fumes (iodides) under high heat. Reacts with water and steam to produce toxic and corrosive fumes. Reacts vigorously with oxidants and can burn upon contact with fire.

Colorless to yellow liquid. Iodoethane is a stable chemical substance. It is incompatible with strong bases, magnesium, and strong oxidising agents and gets discoloured when exposed to light, moisture, and air.It is a saturated hydrocarbon iodide with extremely active chemical properties. Its reactivity is mainly determined by the highly polar carbon-iodine (C-I) bond. Due to the excellent leaving ability of the iodine atom, it is a powerful alkylating (ethylating) reagent that is highly frequently used in industry and laboratories: it can undergo the Williamson reaction with sodium alkoxide or phenol sodium to form ethers, undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions with primary or secondary amines to form higher amines or quaternary ammonium salts, and easily react with thioalcohols and carboxylates to introduce ethyl groups. This substance is highly prone to photolysis reactions. When exposed to light or in the air, it will slowly decompose and release elemental iodine, causing the liquid to gradually turn pale yellow, reddish-brown, or even dark purple; it can react smoothly with magnesium or lithium, and can be precisely prepared in anhydrous ether to produce important Grignard reagents (methyl iodide) or alkyl lithium. In addition, this compound is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. It does not have a flash point but will release iodine hydride (HI) and iodine-containing toxic fumes when heated under high temperature, exposed to open flame, or exposed to light.

Application Of Iodoethane

A useful synthetic reagent for the introduction of ethyl groups.Iodoethane is an excellent ethylating agent used in organic synthesis to introduce an ethyl group into a compound. It reacts with magnesium to form the Grignard reagent, ethylmagnesium iodide which is used in organic synthesis. It is involved in the preparation of 1-ethyl-3-nitro-2-phenyl-indole and also serves as hydrogen radical promoter.

It is an extremely crucial and highly efficient ethylation reagent and a high-purity fine chemical intermediate. In the pharmaceutical and pesticide industries, it is widely used for the synthesis of various antibiotics, anesthetics, psychotropic drugs, and new highly effective insecticides. By precisely introducing ethyl groups into specific molecular targets, its biological activity and lipid solubility are significantly enhanced. In organic synthesis and polymer materials chemistry, it is the core precursor for preparing alkyl zinc, Grignard reagents, and other metal organic catalysts. It is often used for catalyzing the polymerization of special rubbers and serves as a functional modifier monomer in the fine synthesis of new functional dyes, high-end fragrances, and advanced electronic chemicals. Moreover, due to its extremely high density and unique refractive index, it is used as a precise specific gravity measurement liquid in the heavy mineral separation industry and assumes the role of an analytical standard substance in the manufacturing of scientific instruments.
