Penicillin G potassium salt #CAS113-98-4
Potassium penicillin, also known as penicillin G potassium salt, is a white crystalline powder, odorless or with a slight characteristic odor, and hygroscopic. It is readily soluble in water, physiological saline, and glucose solution. Aqueous solutions are easily degraded at room temperature and rapidly degraded upon contact with acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents. Penicillin has good antibacterial activity against hemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and non-penicillinase-producing staphylococci. It has moderate antibacterial activity against enterococci. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, Actinomyces bovis, Streptococcus moniliforme, Listeria, Leptospira, and Treponema pallidum are sensitive to this product. It also has some antibacterial activity against Haemophilus influenzae and Bordetella pertussis; other Gram-negative aerobic or facultative anaerobic bacteria show poor sensitivity to this product. This product exhibits good antibacterial activity against Clostridium spp., Peptostreptococcus anaerobic bacteria, and Bacteroides melanin-producing bacteria, but its antibacterial activity against Bacteroides fragilis is poor. Penicillin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Application of Penicillin G potassium salt
Penicillin G is a narrow spectrum antibiotic derived from Streptococcus pneumoniae. Penicillin G potassium salt is used as a cell culture additive as an antibiotics. Use to inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by inhibition of the cell wall peptidoglycan chain cross-lining. It is the drug of choice for groups A, B, C and G streptococci, nonenterococcal group D streptococci, viridians group streptococci, and non-penicillinase producing staphylococcus. The potassium salt has been used to study murosomes of staphylococci and the penicillin-induced lysis of Streptococcus mutans.
